ARTIST STATEMENT

While aestheticizing ruined spaces is unavoidable through the use of the photograph, my current body of work ("Decay & Decor") is intended not only to beautify the mundane and abandoned, but also to provide clues to the people who once lived there. By not only documenting these ruins, but also rearranging remnants in the space, a transformation is made; intentionally the line between this intervention and the natural ongoing process of change is blurred. Photographing fragmented imagery of flat pictorial planes and juxtapositioning images from urban ruins to that of faux decor' and antiques, begs the question of valued aestheticization. A visual comparison between these forgotten places and the beauty that lies within is formed, leaving one with a partial glimpse of a culture left behind.
